Call for Applicants for the 2012 Faculty Learning Communities

(Deadline Monday Feb. 13, 2012)

In January 2012 the Center for Teaching and Learning was awarded funds to support three Faculty Learning Communities (FLCs).

What are FLCs?

FLCs are peer lead groups of faculty (8-12) that engage in an active, collaborative, and supportive, year–long program with curriculum focused on a particular topic, problem or question. The goal of the FLC is to develop skills, knowledge, and expertise in the area of interest by creating a focused time and space apart from the daily work environment. The products of these FLCs will enable faculty to produce, collect, and evaluate evidence of student learning or secure funding for scholarly or creative projects.

What are the topics for the 2012 FLCs?

Examining the Impacts of Learning Management System (LMS) Tools using Action Research: Four specific SacCT 9.1(Blackboard 9.1) tools are examined. Participants focus on the setup and implementation of the tool in comparison to its learning impact. Participants will also conduct a pilot study of the effect of their technology implementation on student learning. Download the Syllabus for 2012 Blackboard FLC.

Writing and Submitting Successful Grant Proposals: Participants engage in a step by step grant writing process, including identifying funding sources, writing a persuasive project narrative, constructing a budget, and submitting a completed grant proposal. Download the Syllabus for 2012 GrantWriting FLC.

Program Assessment: Working in a program team, faculty will align program learning objectives to the Baccalaureate Learning Goals and course curriculum. Faculty will collect and assess student work that provides evidence of achieving student learning outcomes across courses rather than within a particular course. Download the Syllabus for 2012 Assessment FLC.

What are the participation requirements?

Full time or Part time Sacramento State employment, January – December 2012

Commitment to attend all FLC meetings and submit all specified deliverables by deadlines

What are the benefits of participation?

Technical and administrative support for production of deliverables

$600 Professional Development Funds awarded upon submission of FLC deliverables

The Center for Teaching and Learning is initiating a new, year-long faculty learning community (FLC) titled, Cognitive Coaching: Enacting Reflective Practice to Transform Teaching. Applications will be due by 5:00 PM September 9, 2011.

The Center for Teaching and Learning is initiating a new, year-long faculty learning community (FLC) titled, Cognitive Coaching: Enacting Reflective Practice to Transform Teaching. Cognitive coaching is a collaborative process in which faculty partners learn skills to facilitate partner’s thinking about planning, conducting and self-assessing their teaching. Outcomes are greater personal control, creativity, and satisfaction in teaching; deep collegial connections, and improved student learning.

Selected participants will receive upon completion of the program, $700 in faculty professional development funds. Since participants will work in pairs, commitment to attendance to all workshops is essential. The CTL is seeking a broad range of participants from all colleges, and academic ranks including lecturers.

Four workshops in Fall 2011 will focus on understanding the coaching model; developing and practicing coaching skills through mutual class observations. Four workshops in Spring 2012 will feature transfer of cognitive coaching skills to the classroom to facilitate student engagement and learning. Participants will engage in action research on coaching effects in higher education classrooms.

To apply, download the Cognitive Coaching FLC Application. If you questions, please call Lynn Tashiro or Mark Stoner at 278-5945 or visit the FLC wiki at: http://csuscognitivecoachingflc.wikispaces.com/Home. Applications will be due by 5:00 PM September 15th, 2011.
