Workshop Updates

Faculty are invited to a Brown Bag on “Teaching the One Book,” on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at noon in the CTL conference room.

The Sacramento State University One Book Program has selected Kristen Iversen’s Full Body Burden: Growing Up in the Nuclear Shadow of Rocky Flats (Crown, 2012) its 2013-2014 One Book. Full Body Burden is a memoir about a young woman growing up in a small Colorado town near the nuclear weapons plant in Rocky Flats, known as “the most contaminated site in America.” The book alternates between stories of coming of age under constant, yet hidden threats of nuclear contamination and the Cold War on the one hand and the hidden costs of alcoholism and cancer.

Relying on interviews, FBI and EPA reports, and court documents, Iversen balances investigative journalism and probing memoir to explore the private and public costs of radioactive waste, family secrets, and governmental policies.

The Brown Bag will be an opportunity for faculty members to learn about and share ways to incorporate the One Book into their courses as required or recommended readings or for for extra credit assignments. With the particular focus on the natural and social sciences, faculty from those disciplines are highly encouraged to consider adopting the book and attending the Brown Bag.
